PC Build Log: Introduction

My addiction isn’t drugs, alcohol, or sugar. It’s learning about the newest gadget, piece of software or big innovation in the world of science and technology. For years, I’ve read about, watched, and listened to almost every there is to know about that world. Over that time, I’ve always had one goal in mind: building my own computer.

In the early days of computing, building your own was almost a necessity, as companies were slow to push out
new, pre-built devices to consumers (at least until a fruit-themed company changed the game). Today, in the age of “Smaller, Slimmer, Sleeker”, buying a clunky desktop PC isn’t what most people have in mind when walking into an electronics store and building your own is now strictly within the realm of computer enthusiasts and hardcore gamers.

I’ve owned four laptops over the past six years, each one more powerful and with more features than the last. Recently, I decided to finally retire my HP Pavilion G6 Notebook, which has served me well for 2.5 years now, and upgrade something a little more powerful. In my research I realized a few things:

  • I hardly ever move my laptop (maybe once per week at most)
  • The laptops that met my criteria were in the $800-$1000 price range
  • I could build a desktop more powerful that any of those laptops for the same price

With the budget, time and knowledge all available, I started the exciting process of building my own PC.
